Telecom giants MTN are preparing legal action against the Nigerian Communications Commission to contest the N1.4 trillion fine imposed on the company by the NCC.
MTN are saying that all negotiations between itself and the NCC had failed to yield fruit and they are left with the no other option than go to court.
Recall that N1.4 trillion fine was imposed on the telecom company for failing to deactivate millions of unregistered sim cards as directed by the NCC. The fine was said to have been reduced by about 30% but as it stands, MTN does not want to comply.
Statement from MTN ;
“All factors having a bearing on the matter have been thoroughly and carefully considered, including a review of the circumstances leading to the fine and the subsequent letters received from the NCC.”
“MTN Nigeria, acting on legal advice, has resolved that the manner of the imposition of the fine and the quantum thereof is not in accordance with the NCC‘s powers under the Nigerian Communications Act and therefore there are valid grounds upon which to challenge the fine.”
The fine was due to pay 31st of December 2015.
